Back to School Splash: A Volunteer’s Perspective

Back To List

August 1, 2017

Not knowing what to expect, Joy heads to SOS Local’s Back to School event to volunteer. She is struck with the energy and excitement buzzing around the event. The line of families is long and the air is sticky, but the kids can’t wait to splash around Hawaiian Falls for the day. Joy happily volunteers to pass out a few gift cards to families.

There are so many people and Joy wants to give the gift cards to those who really need them. She begins to walk towards a young mother and father with two small kids and hands them one of the gift cards.

Tears immediately fill their eyes. They desperately need the financial help. They share with Joy that they are unable to purchase many things their kids need for school, but now they could. The best part is that the amount of the gift card was the exact amount they needed.

As the event ends, Joy high-fives all the kids coming out of the park and smiles warmly at the parents as she wishes them a good school year. These families aren’t the only ones who benefited from Back to School—Joy was equally touched by them.

For the past 8 years, SOS Local has given away thousands of backpacks and supplies to kids as they come for a day of fun with their families. We have several ways for volunteers to help out.

  • Bring backpacks and school supplies to our office in Roanoke. Here is the list.

  • Sign up to pack the backpacks before the event.

  • Sign up to volunteer the day of the event.
