This will hit many lower-income households with as much as <\/span><b>a $400\/month decrease in food stamps<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> starting in March 2023.\u00a0 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kxan.com\/news\/texas\/over-3-million-texans-will-see-a-reduction-in-snap-benefits-in-march\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In Texas, it is anticipated that that will affect roughly 3.6 million households<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and will put an <\/span><b>increased burden on food banks and food-aid programs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Meanwhile, these aid programs are already <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kagstv.com\/article\/money\/texas-food-banks-urge-legislatures-to-increase-funding\/499-25107ad1-b7e4-4857-ad5c-945ed6bc683a\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling to keep up with increasing food prices<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conflict, Natural Disasters and Climate Change continue to affect hunger and food supply. Most recently, we are seeing a desperate need for food in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/newsround\/64535420\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the aftermath of the Turkey and Syria earthquake. With the death toll over 30,000<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is anticipated that <\/span><b>millions will need emergency food assistance in the coming weeks and months.\u00a0<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The combination of pandemic recovery, natural disasters and climate change are creating a <\/span><b>global food crisis<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that\u2019s raising concern. Many respected agencies are predicting that in 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imf.org\/en\/News\/Articles\/2023\/02\/08\/pr2335-joint-statement-by-the-fad-imf-wbg-wfp-and-wto-on-food-and-nutrition-security-crisis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the crisis in inflated food prices will turn into a food supply crisis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Additionally, many countries are seeing a <\/span><b>huge increase in undernourishment<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ve known for some time that there is a <\/span><b>direct correlation between the rise in food costs and the direct negative effect that it has on hungry children<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5fc228ec616251320838493c\/t\/6384d4927e103318bf65054c\/1669649555124\/ST4N_Child+Wasting+in+Vulnerable+Communities+Brief_v5%5B44%5D.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stand Together for Nutrition\u2019s Micronutrient Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> released some new findings at the end of 2022, showing \u201c<\/span><b>a 5% increase<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the real price of food will <\/span><b>increase the risk of wasting<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> [in vulnerable children] <\/span><b>by 9%.\u201d<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Furthermore, they anticipate that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5fc228ec616251320838493c\/t\/6384d4927e103318bf65054c\/1669649555124\/ST4N_Child+Wasting+in+Vulnerable+Communities+Brief_v5%5B44%5D.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this crisis will affect the most vulnerable, particularly mothers and children who live in poor households and in rural communities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfpusa.org\/women-are-hungrier-infographic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">U.N. World Food Program is shedding light on recent finding around women and hunger.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The UN introduced this observation of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wfpusa.org\/women-are-hungrier-infographic\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">women \u201ceating last and least<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d raising concern that in areas where we are seeing disasters, women tend to disproportionately bear the brunt of hunger.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One contributing factor to this is that \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2023\/01\/25\/the-gender-hunger-gap-is-real-and-getting-worse\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women are increasingly becoming primary breadwinners for their homes as climate change pushes men to migrate away to find work outside their towns and villages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hunger is a challenging issue that many of the world\u2019s leading agencies are working to solve. Since the launch of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sdgs.un.org\/goals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sustainable Development Goals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> back in 2015, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sustainabilitymag.com\/sustainability\/sustainable-zero-hunger-sdg-united-nations-development-undernourishment-goals\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we\u2019ve actually seen a steady increase in hunger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, largely attributed to the pandemic and disasters. From 2019-2021, we saw <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/news.un.org\/en\/story\/2023\/01\/1132817\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hunger in Latin America jump by 30%.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 It begs the question, <\/span><b>had so many of us not been working on combatting hunger, how much worse would it have been?<\/b><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just because a problem is complex and hard to solve doesn\u2019t mean it isn\u2019t worthy of our efforts and energy.
