Why Water –
Globally, 1.2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water; a large percentage of that number is children.
Water is the most immediate vital necessity for life. Over the past two decades, we have had devastating encounters with communities whose water was either, not sufficient, or was making them sick and killing their children. These encounters still happen daily.
Asha*is 8 years old. Her community does not have access to safe water. At 4am Asha must join her mother on a long trek to a contaminated river to collect the days supply to water. Asha must take this journey three times a day. Because of her responsibilities, Asha cannot go to school.
Jarab*is 4 years old. He lives in a community that has a shallow hand pump. This well is not deep enough to reach clean water. They know it’s dirty, but it is the only source of water they have. Jarab’s parents must daily choose between the quick death of dehydration or the slow death of contamination. Most children in Jarab’s community do not make it past the age of 5.
Why are we passionate about water? Because we believe safe drinking water is not a commodity, but a necessary building block for an at-risk child. Until clean water in secure in the world of an at-risk child, nothing else is secure.
