Champions Mentorship Program

Champions Mentorship Program

Written By: Janie W.

According to the IDRA Attrition Study, 2021-2022, Texas schools are losing 1 out of every 5 students for graduation – which translates to losing 10 students per hour. Although the overall high school attrition rate in Texas public schools continues to decline, there are still a lot of students at-risk of not graduating high school.

At SOS, we believe every child matters! This is why we met with counselors, teachers and principals and heard from each one of how they need a mentor program for their at-risk students but have no way to add this to their curriculum. So we did some homework and have put in place a mentor program for elementary school students. With hundreds of activity-based lessons covering more than 30 critical social and emotional skills, students learn:

  • How to communicate effectively
  • How to make informed decisions
  • How to set and achieve goals
  • How to resolve conflicts/solve problems
  • How to respect one another
  • And More!

A report by Civic Enterprises and Hart Research Associates states that while mentoring is needed and wanted by young people to help them stay on the path to high school graduation, college success, and productive adulthood, a significant mentoring gap exists in America, especially for at-risk youth. More than 1 in 3 children never had an adult mentor of any kind while they were growing up. In order to close the mentoring gap, additional adult mentors must join the effort to meet their needs each year.

“I believe so strongly in the power of mentoring because I know the transformative effect one caring adult can have on a child’s life. That caring adult is a gateway to all the other resources that a young person needs to fulfill their potential.”
