May 28 is World Hunger Day. This initiative, founded in 2011 by The Hunger Project, raises awareness and inspires sustainable solutions to eliminate hunger and poverty.
Hunger and Poverty Around the World
Approximately 700 million individuals do not know where their next meal will come from. Even in your community, many children may only be able to afford one meal a day.
Since hunger looks different all over the globe, so do our meal programs. From emergency meal sites and custom-made food to help combat extreme malnutrition, school lunches, and summer meal programs, our goal is to ensure that no child experiences the pain of hunger.
Addressing an at-risk child’s fundamental needs, like food, can help change the trajectory of their future.
- The first five years of a child’s life form the foundation of their future. Meeting their basic needs during these vulnerable years improves their likelihood of reaching adulthood.
- The lack of food and proper nutrition is one of the leading contributors to child mortality. Every day, 10,000 children die of hunger and related causes.
- Children are at high risk of being trafficked when they lack access to basic necessities. 1 in 3 trafficking victims is a child, and hunger is one of the leading vulnerabilities traffickers exploit. Traffickers target them because they know their situation is desperate.
We have seen, in our 30+ years of work, the power that meeting basic needs has in protecting at-risk children from traffickers. Meeting children’s basic need for food will not only help their bodies heal and grow, but also secure their future.
Food creates a ripple effect, impacting every part of a child’s life.
We recently celebrated 50 million meals served to at-risk children, but the demand remains significant.
